Background of the study
Nigerian social media platforms, particularly Facebook and Twitter, have transformed everyday communication by introducing novel syntactic structures and unconventional sentence formations. The informal nature of online interactions has led to the emergence of creative linguistic practices that deviate from traditional norms (Okoro, 2023). This study examines the syntactic patterns evident in Facebook and Twitter comments, where users frequently blend local language influences with Standard English. These platforms have become a laboratory for syntactic innovation as users experiment with punctuation, word order, and clause formation to convey nuances of emotion and cultural context (Ibrahim, 2024). Digital interactions reveal a spectrum of syntactic adjustments that mirror societal changes and a growing acceptance of hybrid language forms. Such innovations are particularly significant in the Nigerian context, where multilingualism and cultural diversity converge to create a unique linguistic landscape (Adeyemi, 2023). This research investigates how syntax is reconstructed in digital comments and explores the implications for traditional grammatical theories. By analyzing comment threads on Facebook and Twitter, the study aims to understand how digital media fosters syntactic experimentation and contributes to broader language evolution, reflecting the dynamic interplay between technology, identity, and communication (Balogun, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the ubiquity of social media usage in Nigeria, there is limited scholarly research addressing the specific syntactic variations that occur in online comments. Existing studies have primarily focused on vocabulary and pragmatic markers, leaving syntactic innovation underexplored (Afolabi, 2023). The informal and spontaneous nature of online comments poses a challenge to established grammatical rules, yet the impact of these syntactic modifications on overall language development remains unclear. This study seeks to fill this gap by systematically investigating syntactic patterns within Facebook and Twitter comments. The aim is to identify the key characteristics of these innovations and assess their implications for both digital communication and traditional linguistic structures (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze syntactic patterns in Nigerian Facebook and Twitter comments.
  2. To identify the influence of informal online communication on syntactic innovation.
  3. To assess the implications of these syntactic changes for traditional grammatical frameworks.

Research questions

  1. What are the predominant syntactic patterns in Nigerian Facebook and Twitter comments?
  2. How does informal digital communication contribute to syntactic innovation?
  3. What are the implications of these syntactic changes for conventional language structures?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it contributes to the understanding of language evolution in digital environments by focusing on syntactic innovation. The findings will enhance our comprehension of how online communication shapes language structure, offering insights beneficial to linguists, educators, and communication strategists. In examining Facebook and Twitter comments, the research highlights the impact of technology on language use and informs future linguistic and sociocultural studies (Okafor, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses solely on the syntactic analysis of Facebook and Twitter comments within Nigerian digital discourse. It is limited to online language interactions and does not extend to other linguistic components or offline communication practices.

Definitions of terms

  • Social Media Comment: User-generated text posted in response to content on digital platforms.
  • Digital Discourse: Communication conducted through digital platforms, characterized by rapid and informal exchanges.
